What is Yoga?

The word YOGA comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means to bind, or join together, or yoke. Yoga is the union, or joining together, therefore, of the body and the mind.

Yoga is one of the six systems of Indian philosophy.

On the spiritual plane, it means union of the Individual Self with the Universal Self. Yoga is the union of the body, mind, emotions and intellect.

The origin of Yoga lies way back in prehistory. It evolved slowly and was developed by the ancient sages in India. Yoga poses were the way they trained their bodies to be able to stand long periods of meditation. The poses themselves - asanas - created a further level of contemplation as achieving them required focus and discipline. Generally the techniques of Yoga were passed on from teacher [or guru] to students [or disciples] by word of mouth.

Some of the earliest written texts, which mention Yoga and allude to its practice, were the ancient Vedas, which are approximately 4000 years old.

More direct descriptions were later written down by the Yogi Patanjali and are often mentioned as the oldest written record of Yoga. These are approximately 2000 years old.

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar yoga focuses on precision, alignment and the length of time spent in each asana, or pose. In Iyengar yoga we don’t move quickly from pose to pose, but stay for an extended period of time, working on the alignment and perfecting the pose, so we build strength, flexibility, stamina and balance. As Mr. Iyenger said: "Easy to attain, difficult to maintain."

The Iyengar method of yoga was developed by yoga master BKS Iyengar.
Mr Iyengar, with his intellectual and spiritual practices, masterminded the techniques that can be used by all practitioners of yoga.

He was able to read the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and - as he studied and learned from them - described and depicted them in such a way that regular people like us are able to understand them today!

"Research-based experience" and "experience-based research" helped Mr Iyengar in evolving this technique, which is now known as Iyengar Yoga. He made it possible for people from all walks of life to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras written by Patanjali.

He wrote his first book Light On Yoga in 1966 - it has since been translated in 18 languages.

The use of props in yoga was developed and designed by BKS Iyengar - such as wooden blocks, blankets, belts, and ropes. These help the practitioner to achieve alignment in the asana. Regular practice of Iyengar Yoga definitely integrates the body, mind and emotions. Mr. Iyengar was born in 1918, and practiced this yoga himself every day until he died in 2014 at the age of 94.

When you take a yoga class with an Iyengar certified teacher you know that they have applied years of training and study. You can be assured that you will be taught safely and correctly so that you can enjoy the full benefits of yoga.
